Jordanian Citizenship for the Family: Who Is Included, Dual Citizenship and Revocation

Families usually ask me two things about Jordan: who comes with the investor, and whether the old passport stays. The first question has a clear answer in the criteria. The second does not, and I explain why. Checked on 28 October 2026 in the Cabinet amendments of 15 July 2026 and the Nationality Law No. 6 of 1954 in the Refworld translation, last amended in 1987.
Who receives citizenship with the investor
| Family member | Condition |
|---|---|
| Spouse | of an investor who met the requirements |
| Daughters | dependent |
| Sons | unmarried, under 24 at the time of application |
| Parents | dependent |
| Sons under 30 with their spouses and children | only if the investment exceeds JOD 2 million |
This applies to both new and existing investors. The 2025 decision had a similar list. BRIDGES adds that children under 18 are included with the parents and that the number of people does not change the investment amount. The criteria do not mention fees per family member.
Dual citizenship: two texts that differ
BRIDGES writes that Jordan lifted its ban on a second nationality in 1987 and that investors do not have to give up their passport. What I see in the law is more nuanced:
- Article 17, as amended in 1987, lets a Jordanian who acquires a foreign nationality keep Jordanian nationality.
- Article 13(3) says a certificate of naturalisation is granted only if the applicant loses the previous nationality by that naturalisation.
The investor criteria do not mention renunciation at all. In my reading, Article 17 protects Jordanians who take another nationality, while Article 13 concerns foreigners who naturalise. I did not find an official text that exempts investors from Article 13(3). Before investing I would ask for written confirmation of how this is applied in your case, and check whether your own country allows a second citizenship.
What a naturalised citizen cannot do
Article 14 says a naturalised person is Jordanian in every respect, with two exceptions:
- no political or diplomatic post, no public office prescribed by the Council of Ministers and no seat in the State Council for at least 10 years;
- a municipal or village council or trade union office only after at least 5 years.
For business, travel and property this changes nothing.

Revocation
Under the investor criteria
The July 2026 criteria say that failure to comply with any prescribed condition results in revocation of citizenship or cancellation of residency. This is why the three year compliance period matters so much on the productive routes.
Under the 1954 law
Article 19 lets the Council of Ministers, with the approval of the King, cancel a naturalisation certificate for acts endangering the peace and security of the state or if it was obtained by misrepresentation.
Passing shares within the family
The July 2026 text allows citizenship for a new partner or a first degree relative who receives the company, provided the qualifying share stays frozen for three years. The detail of the business routes is in the business routes guide.
Questions and answers
Which family members are included?
The spouse, dependent daughters, unmarried sons under 24 at the time of application and dependent parents. If the investment exceeds JOD 2 million, sons under 30 at the time of application are included with their spouses and children.
Can I keep my current passport?
BRIDGES writes that Jordan does not require investors to renounce their nationality. The 1954 law, however, says in Article 13(3) that a certificate of naturalisation is granted only if the applicant loses the previous nationality. I recommend getting written confirmation for your case.
Are there limits for naturalised citizens?
Yes. Under Article 14 of the 1954 law a naturalised citizen may not hold political or diplomatic posts or public offices set by the Council of Ministers, or sit in the State Council, for at least 10 years, and may stand for municipal or village councils and trade union office only after 5 years.
When is citizenship revoked?
The July 2026 criteria state that failure to comply with any condition leads to revocation of citizenship or cancellation of residency. The 1954 law also allows cancellation of a naturalisation certificate for acts endangering state security or for false evidence.
